Today, October 21, Celia Cruz would have turned 101, and her legacy is as alive as ever. Born in Havana, Cuba, Celia captivated the world with her powerful voice, unmatched charisma, and her iconic cry of “¡Azúcar!”, earning her the title of the Queen of Salsa. From her years with La Sonora Matancera to her time with the Fania All-Stars, she broke barriers for women in a male-dominated genre and brought Afro-Caribbean music to stages around the globe. Her joy, Latin pride, and electric stage presence inspired generations of artists who continue to follow in her footsteps. Celia passed away in 2003, but her music still plays at every party, in every kitchen, and on every dance floor, because a queen like her never stops reigning.
