Civil rights icon and labor leader Dolores Huerta has passed away at the age of 96, her family announced today. Born in Dawson, New Mexico, and raised in Stockton, California, Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers alongside Cesar Chavez and served as its vice president for nearly four decades, fighting for fair wages, safer working conditions and dignity for farmworkers across the country. She also gave our community the powerful rallying cry “¡Sí, se puede!”, words that continue to inspire movements for justice to this day. Through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which she founded in 2002, she kept organizing and uplifting women, workers and Latino families well into her 90s. Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in her honor, a fitting tribute to a woman whose courage changed California and the nation forever. Her legacy lives on in every person who continues to stand up and speak out.
